Have you ever considered the possibility that there might be money out there waiting for you to claim?
It might sound too good to be true, but unclaimed money is more common than you think.
Whether it’s forgotten dividends, abandoned bank accounts, or insurance payouts, there are millions of ringgit in unclaimed funds sitting with institutions—funds that rightfully belong to individuals like you.
In this blog, I’ll walk you through the process of searching for unclaimed money using the eGUMIS portal, as well as share my personal journey of reclaiming this forgotten dividend.
How to Search for Unclaimed Money Using the eGUMIS Portal
The eGUMIS Portal is a convenient online platform provided by the Accountant General’s Department of Malaysia that allows individuals to search for unclaimed money.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to searching for unclaimed money using the eGUMIS portal:
- Access the eGUMIS Website: Go to eGUMIS.
- Navigate to the Search Section: Click on “Search” in the main menu, then select “WTD Search.”
- Enter Identification Number: Key in your IC number in the provided field.
- View Results: The portal will display any unclaimed money (Wang Tak Dituntut, or WTD) linked to the IC number.
- Register for More Information: If you want details about the source of the unclaimed money, you’ll need to register for an account on the portal.
The Application Process: Claiming Your Unclaimed Money
Once you’ve discovered unclaimed money through the eGUMIS Portal, the next step is to submit an application to claim it.
Here’s how to go about it:
1. Understand Your Eligibility
Before proceeding, ensure you or the person you’re claiming for is eligible. Applications can be made by:
- The rightful owner of the unclaimed money.
- An estate administrator with a valid Letter of Administration.
- A liquidator for a company in the process of winding up.
- An individual or company specified in a Court Order.
- Relevant authorities like the Companies Commission of Malaysia or the Malaysian Department of Insolvency for dissolved companies.
2. Prepare the Necessary Documents
To successfully claim the money, you’ll need to upload the required supporting documents. These typically include:
- A copy of your NRIC/passport (or the NRIC of the owner if claiming on their behalf).
- Proof of relationship (if claiming for someone else, such as a death certificate or birth certificate).
- Any relevant supporting documents, such as bank statements, dividend statements, or a Court Order.
- If you’re an administrator or liquidator, include the necessary legal documents, such as a Letter of Administration or company liquidation proof.
3. Submit Your Application
- Navigate to the Application Form: Log in to the eGUMIS portal and select the specific unclaimed money record you want to claim.
- Complete the Form: Fill in the application form with accurate details, including the amount, institution, and your contact information.
- Upload Supporting Documents: Attach the necessary documents in the required formats (e.g., PDF, JPEG) and ensure they’re clear and legible.
- Review and Submit: Double-check all the information before submitting the application. Once submitted, the status will update to Document Verification 1.
4. Track the Status of Your Application
After submission, you can track the progress of your application in the Summary/Application List section on the eGUMIS portal. The possible statuses include:
- Document Verification 1 & 2: Your application is being reviewed.
- Query Document 1 & 2: Additional details or corrections are required—check the portal for specific instructions.
- New: The application has been approved and is pending payment processing.
- Completed: Your claim has been processed, and payment will be issued.
- Query or Rejected: If the application is rejected, you may need to revise and resubmit.
5. Receive Your Payment
Once the application is approved and processed, the payment will be made to your registered bank account.
Be patient, as this can take a few days to weeks, depending on the verification and processing timeline.
My Personal Experience
Finding out the RM1.10 unclaimed dividend for my mum turned out to be an insightful experience.
However, given the minimal amount, I ultimately decided that the effort required to provide the necessary documentation outweighed the value of the claim.
This small adventure still taught me a lot about navigating the eGUMIS system and the process for retrieving unclaimed funds.
Conclusion
Checking for unclaimed money might seem like an unlikely way to find funds.
Whether the amount is small or substantial, unclaimed money is rightfully yours, and reclaiming it ensures it doesn’t go to waste.
So, why not check today? You never know what forgotten funds might be waiting for you!
