At 30, Alex, creator of @12ideas12months, has built a net worth of over $700K through her career in big tech, consistent investing, and living below her means. Along the way, she’s shared her income breakdowns, net worth updates, and lessons from both smart decisions and mistakes.
Now, she’s taking on a new challenge: building 12 income streams in 12 months while documenting everything publicly; from testing ideas and landing her first clients to learning how to scale beyond a single paycheck.
In this interview, she shares how she built her financial foundation, why she’s focused on creating multiple income streams, the way she approaches investing, and what her five-year plan looks like as she works toward more flexibility and control over her time.

1. Hi, Alex! For readers discovering you for the first time, could you briefly introduce yourself and share what inspired you to start @12ideas12months?
I’m Alex, and I run @12ideas12months, an Instagram page where I document my personal finance journey, life in big tech, and current challenge to build a new income stream every month in 2026 (hence 12 ideas in 12 months).
I started this project to keep myself accountable, to get inspiration for new side hustle ideas, and to connect with a community of people who share the same drive to build something of their own.
2. You mentioned that you had the concept for this page for about two years before finally launching it. What made you decide that now was the right time to stop waiting and start building publicly?
I finally just said screw it.
I noticed peers in my life taking massive leaps to build their own companies, and it motivated me to dream bigger and do more with the same 24 hours we all have.
I also realized I have a specific window of time to really dedicate to side projects before I want to start a family in about five years.
I decided to start now even though I knew the journey would not be perfect rather than keep waiting for the right moment.
I got tired of making excuses to myself.
3. You’ve shared that part of this project came from feeling bored with the traditional big tech career path. What made you want to challenge yourself to build something beyond the typical 9–5 trajectory?
I was honestly getting tired of the corporate routine.
I did not feel like I was making a big enough impact on the world, or on my own earning potential. I did not want to limit my income to a single salary or have my lifestyle get blindsided by a layoff.
My goal is to build a portfolio career with multiple income streams so I can support myself without a corporate job.
I want the freedom to take a break if I need it, without the financial pressure to keep grinding for a paycheck.
4. Your career has taken you through several roles across big tech and startups. How has that journey influenced the way you think about work, money, and building long-term wealth?
I have realized that while I enjoy working and the perks of corporate jobs, I do not necessarily like working corporate jobs.
It has been fun to pivot through different functions and types of companies, but at the end of the day, I value time freedom.
I do not want to spend my best hours working just to pay bills and keep health insurance, and I don’t want my earning potential to be capped by a few people’s perceptions of my performance.
Right now, I am optimizing my corporate role to perform well while protecting my energy so I can monetize what actually fulfills me.
5. You’ve been very transparent about your finances, including a net worth of around $735K at age 30. Looking back, what habits or decisions played the biggest role in building that foundation?
Well, with the recent market dip, it is looking a bit more like $690k! But the foundation came from a few key moves.
I bought an apartment in 2021 with an incredibly low interest rate. I lived in it for a few years keeping my housing costs way below the city average and it is now a cash flow positive rental.
On a similar note, for most of my adult life, I lived well below my means. I avoided designer goods until last year, kept my housing under $2,000/month, rarely ordered food delivery, and stuck to a moderate travel budget.
6. Behind most financial journeys is some form of support. Have there been mentors or communities that played an important role in shaping your mindset?
My immigrant parents were crucial.
They set me up with the building blocks by opening an IRA for me while I was a student, helping me build credit early by getting me a credit card, and paying for most of my undergraduate tuition so I could start postgrad life debt free.
They taught me how to invest and live below my means almost too much!
My partner has also been a huge influence, being very smart with money and inspiring me to take bigger, calculated risks with investing since I tend to play investments safe (not a bad thing either, just need to be thorough with your own research).
7. What motivated you to launch 12 income streams in 12 months, and how are you approaching it without burning out?
I needed to gamify the process of making money to keep myself motivated.
By treating every month like a different mini hackathon, I am building systems where leads eventually come to me.
The key for me to avoiding burnout is the flexibility of if an idea is not working, I can pivot or try something entirely new the next month!
8. When it comes to generating ideas for new income streams, where do you usually find inspiration?
I started with following YouTube channels like Mission Side Hustle, Rose Han, Charlie Chang, and Jamie and Sarah.
I like trying different side hustles like helping with medical research studies or flipping items.
Also, with the current state of AI tools like Claude and Gemini, I feel limitless to building things from scratch.
I see industry gaps and problems everywhere, and I now have the tools to create and test solutions quickly.
9. How would you describe your investment philosophy?
I am not interested in dividends for the sake of dividends, since I would rather invest in high growth stocks.
I love real estate because it is a tangible asset that can break even or profit via rent.
Crypto has also become a much larger bucket for me over the last year as I have researched it more.
Overall, I am moving toward leveraging my investments for loans to scale my impact, on top of buying and holding stable ETFs.
10. What is your five-year plan, and what would success look like for you by then?
In five years, success to me is being completely out of the corporate world with a portfolio of stable, diverse income streams.
I want full time freedom to build my family while still working on projects I love, perhaps as an angel investor or doing private equity deals.
11. What are you most curious to learn about yourself through this process?
I want to see exactly how much I can accomplish in a single year.
I am curious to see the shift from relying on one or two sources of income to having a dozen different avenues supporting me.
12. Finally, for Americans who want to pursue financial freedom or build multiple income streams but feel overwhelmed about where to start, what advice would you give them?
Just start. The time is going to pass anyway, and perfect is the enemy of done.
Take baby steps: start with one project, one weekend, or one day with a friend.
It is MUCH easier with accountability to find a friend who wants to make moves with you or joining an online community.
I’m building my 3rd income stream this year as a joint project with one of my closest friends right now!
Bonus: Is there anything else you would like to share?
It is significantly easier to save and invest when you focus on the income side of the equation.
Budgeting is important, and is something I want to work on and share my journey on my page, but I believe scrimping and saving can only take me so far.
Once you truly believe you can increase your earning potential, everything changes.
