Step 1: What Even Is a Style Guide (And Why You Need One)
Think of your personal style guide as your brand’s cheat sheet. It’s a centralized document where you keep track of your brand’s visual elements—colors, fonts, even logos or graphics you like.
I like to describe it as the “same colors, same font, same vibe” rulebook.
A solid style guide helps you stay consistent across all your platforms—Instagram, YouTube, your website, email newsletters, you name it. When people see your content, they’ll recognize you instantly.
That’s the power of visual branding, and it starts with a style guide.
Step 2: Discovering Your Core Vibe and Purpose
Before you start picking colors or fonts, you’ve got to figure out what you want to communicate through your visuals.
Here’s how I recommend doing it:
- Define your “why.” Ask yourself: Why are you creating content or building a brand? Is it to teach, to inspire, to vent, to build community?
- Figure out your content type. Are you posting videos, writing blogs, sharing product photos, giving tutorials?
- Decide how you want people to feel. Do you want your content to feel cheerful and bright? Calm and minimalist? Moody and artistic? Confident and empowering?
For example, if you want to give off an upbeat, happy vibe, your colors might be warm and light—like peach, sunshine yellow, or baby blue.
If you’re going for moody and deep, think forest green, navy, or wine red.
💡 Pro tip: Make a Pinterest board. This is my favorite part. Pin anything that feels like your brand—color palettes, outfits, desk setups, quotes, even product packaging. This is your visual brainstorm.
Step 3: Choosing Your Visual Elements
Here’s where the fun begins: selecting the actual visual pieces that make up your style guide.
Picking Your Brand Colors
1. Start with what you love. Maybe you’re drawn to muted tones, bold neons, or soft pastels. Use Pinterest and search phrases like “boho color palettes” or “moody pink aesthetic.”
2. Choose around 6 core colors. Think of them as your “brand rainbow.” Usually, you’ll have:
- A primary color
- A secondary color
- 1–2 neutrals
- 1–2 accents for contrast
3. Get the hex codes! These are the exact color codes you’ll use to stay consistent. You can find them using online hex code tools or eyedropper extensions.
Write these down in your style guide. Trust me, future you will thank you when designing Instagram highlights or Canva thumbnails.
Picking Your Fonts
1. Find fonts that vibe together. A good rule of thumb is one headline font and one body font. They should look good side by side without clashing.
2. Test them in the apps you use. Whether that’s Canva, Adobe Express, or even Google Slides, make sure the fonts are available and easy to use.
I once picked a gorgeous font, only to realize I couldn’t use it on Instagram stories without screenshotting and uploading. Learn from my mistake.
Choosing Design Elements (Optional but Super Helpful)
If you regularly use graphics—like icons, illustrations, or Canva elements—add them to your style guide too.
1. Match them to your brand. Change their colors to match your palette.
2. Use them consistently. For example, if you use a certain star doodle in your YouTube thumbnails, make it part of your branding.
These small touches make your content feel cohesive and you.

Step 4: Building Your Style Guide
You don’t need fancy design software to build a style guide. Canva works perfectly and is super beginner-friendly.
Here’s how I set mine up:
1. Create a new Canva design using custom dimensions: 11 x 8 inches (landscape).
2. Add a title like “[Your Name] Style Guide” using one of your brand fonts.
3. Add sections for:
- Colors: Use circles or squares to display your hex-coded brand colors.
- Fonts: Type the name of each font and apply it to the text so you’ll never forget.
- Elements (optional): Drop in icons or shapes you regularly use, and adjust their colors.
You now have your own beautiful, branded style guide!
Step 5: Use It
Once your style guide is done, the real magic happens when you start using it consistently.
Save and Access It Easily
- Download it as a PNG or PDF.
- Screenshot the colors and keep them in your phone’s favorites.
- Use it while designing Instagram stories, YouTube thumbnails, or even email headers.
Apply It Everywhere
- Social media: Match your banner, profile photo, and highlight covers.
- Website: Keep your fonts and colors uniform across pages.
- Merch or printables: If you’re creating products, refer back to your style guide to keep them on-brand.
Bonus: Bring It Into Real Life
This is optional, but if you really want your brand to pop…
- Buy clothes in your brand colors.
- Take photos in spaces that match your aesthetic.
- Decorate your room or desk with similar hues—yes, even down to the plants.
It’s kind of amazing how your brand vibe can spill into your life in a good way.
